3 School holiday recipes the kids can help with

School Holiday Kitchen Fun

The Easter holidays are just around the corner, which means the kids are nearly off school for two whole weeks. If you're anything like us, the idea of your munchkins being home for a fortnight fills you with a mixture of excitement and dread.

Because – YAY – quality time with your mini-me! But also – OH NO! – two whole weeks of hearing those fateful words on repeat: "I'm booooooored…".

While we're big fans of plonking them in front of the TV from time to time, we're also strong believers in using school holidays to spend time bonding with the kiddos. And what better way to bond than hanging out in the kitchen?

We've put together a few of our favourite kid-friendly recipes to help your little sous chefs learn some new skills in the kitchen. These meals are delicious, fun, fairly well balanced and a switch-up from the usual copious amounts of chocolate eaten over Easter.

Teach them these recipes and your little people will be serving you three meals a day in no time at all. And bonus– you'll get to eat the spoils of your efforts as you go!

Brekky

Breakfast in our house is alllllll about the bacon and eggs. We make no secret of our love for bacon, and there's no better pairing than bacon and eggs. It's like PB & J, Sonny and Cher, or Batman and Robin – better together.

That's why we think it's an essential recipe to teach your kids from day dot. After all, it's a Kiwi staple.

The key to this recipe is simple: use quality products. We're big fans of Henderson's Middle Bacon and think there's no better option for your classic bacon & eggs brekky. Honestly, use our Henderson’s bacon and some good free-range eggs, and you just can't go wrong with this recipe.

Your kids' future spouse will have you to thank when they're all grown up and can cook up a legendary brekky-in-bed!

Lunch

You and your kids have made it to the middle of the day. Hurray! The chances are that by now, you've had at least one tantrum, one injury, and about twelve rounds of uncontrollable sobbing. You definitely deserve lunch.

Luckily the lunch menu today is looking good. And luckily, you have your junior sous chefs to help you prepare it.

This recipe for Salami Pizza Scrolls is awesome for school holidays but also makes a great addition to school lunch boxes. It uses our favourite Henderson's Italian or Pepperoni Salami and a tasty blend of cheeses. Super more-ish!

Dinner

After a long day of entertaining kids, there's nothing more comforting than sitting down to a big bowl of creamy, crispy delicious Mac and Cheese. Mmmm.

Seriously – is there any food more comforting than Mac and Cheese? Mac and Cheese is the food version of being enveloped in a warm hug. We would like all of these food hugs, please and thank you.

This is another great recipe to let the kids help with in the kitchen. Whether it's grating cheese, measuring flour, chopping the Henderson's Streaky Bacon, or helping sprinkle the breadcrumb toppings, you can allocate a bunch of small tasks to your kids no matter how young they are.

Here's how the perfect night looks: make this delish Gourmet Smoked Cheddar Mac & Cheese, feed the kiddies their portion, put them to bed, then congratulate yourself on a job well done!

No matter how you decide to spend your school holidays, we wish you the best over this time and hope that you get out and enjoy that last little bit of summer sunshine, maybe with a picnic and one last dip in the ocean.
